Coaching FAQ's
Q. I have a non-Catholic who signed up for my team. How can I be
sure that he/she is within the legal boundaries of my parish?
A. Without question, your safest bet is to contact your Deanery
Director. They have official maps that they can check, and can give
you an official answer.
Q. Are the boundary maps available to me so I can check myself?
A. Currently they are not. We are working on a format that will
allow coaches to look at their boundaries. Even when that becomes
available, it is STRONGLY suggested that you contact your Deanery
Director for an official answer. We also STRONGLY suggest that you
contact a Deanery Director as soon as you have your sign ups, or first
try outs. Although informing a child they can’t be on your team is
never easy, it is better to be told right away rather than 5 or 6
practices into the season.
Q. Do I need a pastor’s signature on my roster?
A. You must have your pastor, or a designated church official
(someone the pastor approves to represent the church officially), sign
the roster on the line immediately after the last participant’s name
you have entered. If a participant is added after the official
signature, that participant will not be allowed on the roster. If you
need to add someone after you have your roster signed, you must either
obtain a new roster and add the person, with the signature added after
their name, or, we may accept the original, resigned by the church
official, immediately after the new name. You should contact your
Deanery Director just to be safe.
Q. Who is responsible if I do have an illegal player/cheerleader on
my team.
A. The head coach is responsible, regardless of how the player
ended up on your team. It is up to you and your parish to ensure that
the participant meets the rules of eligibility as stated in the CYO
rule book. In the case of Catholics, this is usually pretty easy. Your
pastor or parish moderator should be able to tell you if the
participant meets their criterion for being a member of their parish.
If you are dealing with a non-Catholic participant, it is extremely
important that you are sure they live within your parish boundaries.
Contact your Deanery Director with the participant’s address to be
safe. Further, be as sure as you possibly can, that the address you
are giving is indeed the correct address for the participant.
Q. What happens if get caught with an illegal player on my roster,
after the season starts?
A. According to the CYO rulebook, that player can no longer
continue with the team. Further, any games they have participated in
up to the point of being caught, are forfeited. Other action can be
taken, depending on the level of the infraction. Please refer to the
rulebook for specific information. Suffice it to say, you should make
your best effort to determine if a non-Catholic participant’s address
is accurate.
