Red Ryan Alumni Facts

Red Ryan CYO Golf Tournament
On August 18, 1958, 40 golfers teed off in the first NH State CYO golf tournament at the Derryfield Country Club in Manchester. Now, in its 51st year, the tournament continues to be one of the premier youth golf events held annually in the state.

The event, first organized by then Diocesan CYO Director Rev. Colin A. MacDonald, was originally open only to male golfers registered with a Catholic Youth Organization (CYO), now attracts both male and female participants from throughout New Hampshire, with age and residency being the only requirements for participation.

The tournament was renamed the Red Ryan CYO golf tournament in 1978, in honor of the late Francis “Red” Ryan. Ryan, the former golf pro at the Derryfield Country Club, helped organize the initial tournament along with Rev. MacDonald and fellow committee members Babe Guay (Laconia Country Club Pro), Phil Martignetti (Maplewood Golf Course Pro), and Chuck Duffley, the Bishop Bradley High School golf coach. Ryan became a staple figure for the tournament, and was well respected for his contributions to youth golf in the City of Manchester.  Ryan was the first person to win the Manchester City golf championship and the NH Amateur Championship in the same year, accomplishing the feat in 1942.
